Happy birthday Barbara: How we made sure one of our counselling clients had a day to remember

Updated: Feb 4

Everybody deserves a lovely party with friends on their birthday.

Barbara, who attends our counselling service, celebrated her 64th birthday with us recently.

Our staff, social work students and volunteers baked a birthday cake and put together a wonderful spread to ensure it was a day to remember.

Barbara said: “It was the best birthday I’ve ever had.

“They made a real fuss of me and gave me a card signed by everyone, which was lovely and very thoughtful.”

Later, she sent us a ‘thank you’ card, with this message:  “To all the staff and all the other ladies who come to The New Futures Project.

“Thank you for making my birthday a happy and memorable one. I was touched by your kindness – the lovely cake, the cards and the buffet.

“Your kindness is very much appreciated. With best wishes, Barbara.”

Lisa Swann-Davie, who manages our drop-in services, said: “It was a lovely celebration and we are pleased that Barbara feels comfortable enough with us all to allow us to celebrate with her.”

The New Futures Project was set up more than 20 years ago to support women involved in sex work.

However, we have evolved into a comprehensive welfare and counselling service for women and young people dealing with sexual abuse or exploitation, domestic violence, trafficking, poverty and debt, substance use or mental ill-health.
