We want to run a series of therapeutic and enjoyable classes for women living with trauma – can you help us?

We announced recently that we are redesigning the drop-in service we offer to some of the most vulnerable women and young people we see.
Part of that involves a refurbishment of the part of the building where some of that support work takes place.
But, more importantly, we are keen to ensure the time women spend with us is as therapeutically beneficial, constructive, stimulating and, let’s face it, fun, as it can possibly be.
Well, now we need a number of people who can help us realise our vision for the service.
Generally, women come to our drop-in to eat, get a shower, do their laundry and choose a change of clothes – as well as picking up other daily essentials to take away with them, such as food, condoms, toiletries and personal hygiene items.
Crucially, the time they spend here helps them build bonds with us, meaning we can work out together what we need to do to support them.
A few weeks ago, we decided it could do with a spruce-up and the introduction of extra structured activities, with an emphasis on the therapeutic.
We are developing a programme of activities to support people with their mental health, so we’d like to run programmes of 8-12 weeks of classes such as creative writing, various arts and crafts, yoga, meditation, beauty therapies and grounding exercises.
Our director Della Kagure Brown said: “Really, it is any activity that could provide some therapeutic benefit to people experiencing trauma or who are in crisis.
“We are looking for volunteers who would be interested in running classes in safe and supportive space for women who have experienced sexual trauma.
“You would be working alongside one of our experienced team members and taking the lead in running your activity.
“We think this may suit someone who has some time on their hands who would enjoy getting involved with the project perhaps someone who has worked in teaching, therapy or counselling who would be interested in a new challenge.”
If you are interested in working with us to improve the lives of our clients and think you have something to offer they may benefit from then please contact Usmarn on 0116 251 0803 or email us at usmarn@new-futures.org.uk.
