Thank you Alysha: We were delighted when one of our newest supporters dropped by with this wonderful donation

Updated: Feb 4

It’s always a good day when a well-wisher drops by with a donation which will directly benefit the women and young people we support here.

Alysha Eggington, called in last week with a stack of bedding – all of which will go to people who are desperately in need.

And, she tells us, she’ll be back soon with another pile of goods. This time it will be pots and pans, crockery, cutlery and other bits and bobs for the kitchen.

Alysha – whose mum-in-law Avril is the crisis support worker at The New Futures Project – explained that she is helping a friend whose mum is moving from home and into care.

She said: “It’s sheets, blankets, pillows and some towels – about 20 bags – and I’m coming back with some more items too, mostly things for the the kitchen.

“The family wanted everything to go to people who needed help, rather than it all being thrown out.

“I asked Avril if New Futures needed any donations and she said they would be very grateful for any help at all.

“To be honest, I knew a little bit about the project but I learned a lot more about what it does when I came here today.

“The work they do is very important and we are glad we were able to help them and the women they support.”

Lisa Swann-Davie, our drop-in manager, said: “We’re so grateful to Alysha for this enormous donation.

“These items will be a great benefit to our clients, particularly those who are struggling to manage and to obtain even the most basic household items.”

We relay on donations of many kinds, including items to keep our clothing bank stocked up throughout the year.

During the colder months, we desperately need warm clothing, hats, gloves, blankets and sleeping bags.

We’re also grateful for other daily essentials such as food, household goods, toiletries and cosmetics.

Period poverty is a major issue for the women we see, so sanitary products would also help a great deal.

New Futures was set up more than 20 years ago to support women involved in sex work.

However, we have evolved into a comprehensive welfare and counselling service for women and young people dealing with sexual abuse or exploitation, domestic violence, trafficking, poverty and debt, substance use or mental ill-health.
